An Introduction to LOOΠΔ! (Part 2 – Sub-units)

Greetings, fellow people! Welcome to the second part of my 3-part series on the girl group Loona and why they’re great. This part will cover Loona 1/3, Loona Odd Eye Circle and Loona yyxy, the sub-units of Loona. I’m also going to put more information about Yeojin here because she is not in any sub-unit. This will also have links to all of the sub-unit releases from Loona.

Basics about sub-units:

Loona has three subunits. Loona 1/3, the first subunit, is composed of four of the first five members. Odd Eye Circle is the next three members, and yyxy has the last four members. These sub-units promoted between member releases. Both Loona 1/3 and Loona Odd Eye Circle have a mini album and a repackage, while yyxy only has one mini album. Sub-units filled the 6 months of the Loona pre-debut project that weren’t filled with individual debuts, with two months for each sub-unit. A lot of Loona is split by units, such as the concert merch.

This is the second part of this guide, and it will cover sub-units. To see the first part, about the members, click here. The last part will cover Loona as a full group and the history of the Loona project. Because there weren’t as many songs in the last one, I didn’t include my personal favorites because they weren’t as relevant, but I will include them here.

LOONA has dropped an unexpected 'Go Into Orbit' teaser ...

Loona 1/3

Loona 1/3 is composed of the first five members, with the exception of Yeojin. Their unit was the first to be released. They have 2 full music videos, plus special videos for You and Me Together and Rain 51db. Their first release was Love & Live from the mini album Love & Live. They followed this up with Sonatine, the title track for their repackage Love & Evil. They have an innocent concept, and many people regard them as the worst sub-unit because of their ‘generic’ music (although I disagree).

Yeojin

Yeojin is the youngest member of Loona. She is not a part of a sub-unit, but she said in the 400th LoonaTV that she is the slash in Loona 1/3 (because 1/3 in Korean is 3/1 or 3 to 1, it would make them in debut order, with Heejin, Hyunjin and Haseul being the 3, Yeojin being the /, and Vivi being the 1). She couldn’t be part of a sub-unit because of her age, as she had to focus on school work. To make up for it, she is the only member to have three songs with her solo release (although one is a Heejin-Hyunjin duet, meaning she isn’t in it) and she is also the only member to have three versions of her physical album (one with Heejin and Hyunjin called “Yeojin and Loona,” one with Haseul called “Yeojin and Haseul,” and one of just her).

Loona Odd Eye Circle

Loona Odd Eye Circle (commonly referred to as Odd Eye Circle or OEC) is the second sub-unit of Loona, made up of the sixth, seventh, and eighth members. Their unit was second to be released. They have 2 full music videos, Girl Front and Sweet Crazy Love, and a special music video for the English version of Loonatic. Their first release was Girl Front, the title track from their first mini album Mix & Match, which the followed up with Sweet Crazy Love from the repackage Max & Match. They have a more mature or ‘girl-crush’ concept than 1/3, especially in Max & Match.

Loona yyxy

yyxy is the last Loona sub-unit. This unit is composed of the ninth, tenth, eleventh, and twelfth members. They only have one release, but they will be doing a repackage later this year (presumably after Loona’s rumored ballad comeback in May). Their mini album is called Beauty and the Beat, and their only title track Love4eva is a collaboration with Canadian artist Grimes. They do not have any special music videos, but they do have a special trailer that connects them to the rest of the Loonaverse. They have an almost galactic or fantastical concept, which isn’t as cute as 1/3 but also isn’t necessarily as bright or mature as Odd Eye Circle. Their name is pronounced “why-why-by-why” and their concept is described by Blockberry Creative (Loona’s company) as being “new DNA.” They are my personal favorite sub-unit.

And thus concludes my review of Loona’s sub-units (+ Yeojin, again)! I really hope you’ll check them out-they have wonderful music and all of the girls are very hard working. The next thing I post will probably be the full group information about (++) and (XX), as well as more information about Loona!
